FUNCTION DOSSIER

Se — Extraverted Sensing

Fully alive to this very moment — reaching out to embrace the world with all five senses.

What it is

Se is the function closest to 'reality' of all eight: it neither recalls nor calculates nor hedges — it reaches out directly with eyes, ears, and hands to catch whatever is happening right now. People strong in Se tend to give off a sense of being awake — they're the first to notice who got a haircut, which shop opened on the corner, where the opponent is about to move.,Jung described this type as thoroughgoing realists: experience is the end, not the means. For Se, life is not something to be planned — it is something to be lived. Food is best eaten hot; scenery must be seen firsthand; opportunity is something you reach out and take.

What it lets you do

No function is a single skill — each is a set of abilities that reinforce one another. Strong {code} users tend to hold several of these keys at once.

When Se is developed

When imbalanced or undeveloped

Mirror function — Si

Both are Sensing, but Se looks outward while Si looks inward: Se lives in what's happening now; Si lives in what has already happened. Se sees a new restaurant and wants to try it; Si prefers the place they've been going to for ten years — one wants novelty, the other wants certainty.

Tandem function — Ni

In every function stack, Se and Ni always appear as a pair: one end grounded in present reality, the other reaching toward a distant vision. For those strong in Se, Ni is typically the end that takes the longest to grow.

NEUROSCIENCE NOTE · NARDI, 2011

Nardi's EEG research found that Se-dominant individuals enter a whole-brain standby state when confronted with sudden tasks — like a tennis player shifting weight before a serve, ready to move in any direction. He summarized Se as 'quickly and fluidly processing everything happening right now.'

Types that lead with it

As dominant: ESTP · ESFP

As auxiliary: ISTP · ISFP
