Distilling experience into bedrock confidence — using the past to calibrate the present.
What it is
Si is a well-managed archive: everything personally witnessed, every verified method, every sensation the body remembers has been carefully filed away. When something new appears, Si automatically retrieves the closest match — 'I've seen this before; here's how it was handled last time.' This capacity for comparison is precisely what makes Si-dominant people seem reliably steady.,Because of this, Si-strong people have a deep affection for the familiar: the regular haunt, the tool they've broken in, the old holiday ritual. This is not conservatism — it is a genuine appreciation for how much value resides in what time has proven.
What it lets you do
No function is a single skill — each is a set of abilities that reinforce one another. Strong {code} users tend to hold several of these keys at once.
High-Fidelity Memory — Astonishing retention of personally experienced detail — what was said in a meeting three years ago, which drawer a document was filed in: Si can pull these up with accuracy.
Deviation Detection — Si carries an internal 'reference version' of how things should look; any departure is noticed immediately — the number that doesn't add up in a report, the skipped step in a process, the friend's tone that is subtly off today.
Mastery Through Repetition — Practicing until the skill is written into the body — and then performing more reliably, not less, over time. Where others rely on inspiration, Si relies on preparation: solid, consistent, reproducible.
Somatic Attunement — Acutely sensitive to internal bodily signals — fatigue, hunger, discomfort — typically among the first to detect that something is off and to maintain a restorative routine.
Institutional Memory — Skilled at turning hard-won experience into reliable procedures and norms — the living memory of the team's mistakes. Under Si stewardship, the same error rarely happens twice.
When Si is developed
Dependable — when they say it will be done, it will be done
Organized and methodical — clear procedures, clear records
Excellent memory — the team's walking encyclopedia
Lives by a stable rhythm — keeps life settled and well-tended
When imbalanced or undeveloped
Adapts to change a beat behind — first response to something new is 'let me wait and see'
Can get trapped in 'but this is how we've always done it'
Under stress, falls into obsessive detail-checking or amplified physical discomfort
When underdeveloped, experience doesn't consolidate — the same mistakes repeat
Mirror function — Se
Both are Sensing, but Si faces inward while Se faces out: Si stores sensory experience to draw on later; Se spends it on the spot. Si's pleasure is in remembering; Se's pleasure is in what's happening right now.
Tandem function — Ne
In every function stack, Si and Ne always appear as a pair: one end guarding experience that has been tested, the other probing possibility that hasn't been. For those strong in Si, making a little room for Ne adds unexpected brightness to life.
NEUROSCIENCE NOTE · NARDI, 2011
Nardi observed that Si-strong individuals show a low-energy, high-efficiency brain state when performing practiced tasks — repetition has made the neural pathways highly specialized. He summarized Si as 'achieving mastery through review and practice, in service of the group's needs.'
